Nokia 5250: touch screen, Guitar Hero 5 bundled

Nokia has introduced their smallest touch screen device today, the 5250. With a 2.8 inch screen it isn’t as tiny as the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini’s 2.55 inch display, but having played with one recently I’m quite confident in saying that it’s too tiny. Back to the 5250, it’s only 115 EUR (145 USD or 95 GBP) when it comes out this October and for that amount of change you get a 2 megapixel camera, quadband EDGE radio, FM radio … and that’s it. No 3G, no WiFi, no GPS. It’s fairly light at only 107 grams, but then again it’s also a bit chunky at 104 mm tall x 49 mm wide x 14 mm thick.

You’ve got to hand it to Nokia though, they admitted that they accidentally leaked this device themselves on their own Conversations blog. We reported that leak earlier this month, and the predictions I gave in terms of specifications and price point were way off. It’s less capable than I thought it would be, but also cheaper too.

Thanks To
Stefan

GL Announces Analysis Tools for 3G Mobile Broadband Networks

GL Communications Inc., announced today the release of its latest Analysis Tools for 3G Mobile Broadband Networks. Addressing the press conference, Mr. Jagdish Vadalia, Senior Manager at GL said, "Mobile network traffic is expected to explode in the coming year as "smartphones" and 3G pervade the mobile user community. In a typical 3G access network, a "smartphone" user has high speed wireless access to the nearest base station (or Node B, in 3G UMTS terminology). Then the transport of voice, video, and data is thru ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). ATM was selected because it provides quality of service necessary for voice but can also carry data equally well".

He added, "ATM can use any form of transmission, but its overhead is quite a burden. If the access network is not carefully designed, ATM bandwidth requirements will significantly affect the bottom line of any service provider. Tools for traffic and protocol analysis are essential".

Mr. Vadalia further added, "As shown below in the picture, when the underlying transmission is TDM, many T1s or E1s are used to carry ATM cells in a technique called Inverse Multiplexing over ATM, or IMA. If the underlying transmission is T3 E3 or SONET SDH, then ATM can be carried directly in an unchannelized mode, which is more efficient. It may be necessary to switch ATM cells from lower speed E1s (possibly in IMA mode) to an unchannelized STM1 or STM4 for traffic concentration and better efficiency. In any case, it is apparent that testing and analysis of ATM traffic is useful on many interfaces including T1, E1, T3, E3, OC3, OC12, STM1, and STM4. Proper tools will assist in the design of the access network and appropriate backhaul architectures".

GL's various test capability to test and analyze ATM over different transmission. These include:

* the ability to capture and playback at up to OC12/STM4 rates with complete bit integrity
* raw transmission and reception of test cell traffic at determined bandwidth
* ATM BERT
* ATM Protocol Analysis
* UMTS Protocol Analysis
* CDMA 2000 Protocol Analysis
* ATM Protocol Analysis over T1 E1 with IMA
* ATM Protocol Analysis over T3
* ATM Protocol Analysis over STM1, STM4, OC3, and OC12
* ATM Tx/Rx Raw Cells
* ATM BERT for OC3, OC12, STM1, and STM4
* ATM Record Playback for T1, E1, T3, OC3, OC12, STM1, and STM4
* UMTS Protocol Analysis
* CDMA 2000 Protocol Analyzer

Addressing a press conference after the launch of 3G mobile service, the Chief General Manager acknowledged that BSNL has not been able to provide its service to the people of the State efficiently as a result of erratic power supply.

BSNL also sometime faces the problem of ensuring proper mobile service in rural areas due to lack of diesel, the officer said.

If the power situation improves, the service of the BSNL would be the best, he assured.

In response to a question on reported selling of pre-paid SIM cards of BSNL in Namphalong market of Myanmar, the Chief General Manager maintained that the BSNL is not related to such trades.

Informing that there are many BSNL customers who are yet to clear their outstanding bill in Manipur, the officer appealed to the customers to pay of their pending bills and said that the same could be cleared in instalments.

BSNL launches 3G in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh | Bsnl Broadband

The 3G spectrum has gradually started to spread in India. After the metros and other Tier 2 cities, it was the turn of Hyderabad to go 3G. BSNL launched 3G in the state with the announcement of exceptionally good tariff rates.

New subscribers have some very good offers. STD calls and local calls are priced 50 paisa and 30 paisa. Local SMS will be charges 40 paisa and the users will have to pay 60 paisa for national SMS. Data transfer will be charged 1 paisa per 10 KB. Thus it will be Rs 1 for 1 MB and Rs 1000 for each GB. This should be fair with the users. The subscription charges are also very low at Rs 59. There is also a joining offer that will give users free talk time of 50 minutes and 25 MB of free data transfer.

The tariff for existing subscribers has been so pitched that they may have to migrate to 3G. A non 3G STD will cost them 70 paisa and 3G will cost 50 paisa. This should act as some motivation to change over to 3G. The service will be available in 29 cities and 23 District Headquarters in Andhra Pradesh.

BSNL Aims 250,000 WiMax Subscribers By Year-end

A senior BSNL official has revealed that the company plans to have a user base of at least 250,000 WiMax customers by the end of 2010.

The intentions were revealed in an interview with Telecom Yatra where the unnamed official also added that currently, BSNL's WiMax subscriber base has only 3,000 users. The state-owned telecom service provider recently launched WiMax services in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and has 210 base stations spread across North and East India. BSNL has plans to launch its WiMax services in the urban centres of Kerala and Punjab by next month.

This is apart from the 1,000 base stations in rural areas that are also set to be commissioned next month. Looks like BSNL has big plans for the wireless broadband segment. The growth in this sector, however, will be directly proportional to the impetus that BSNL puts into creating a robust WiMax network. Then, there is the tariff factor as well which will decide if BSNL will be really able to achieve its target subscriber base of 250,000 subscribers by year-end.
